Abstract: Leonard Stöckel (1510–1560) belonged among the prominent figures of the Reformation movement in 16th-century Hungary. Through his pedagogic, theological-catechetical, and church organizational activities, he played a significant role in the dissemination, content formation, and institutional establishment of the ideas of the German "Lutheran" Reformation in the territory of the eastern parts of "Upper" Hungary. This study focuses on the theological analysis of selected works of Leonard Stöckel, namely his Catechism (1556), the Confession of the Five Free East Slovak Cities - Pentapolitana (1549), and the Preface to the General Principles of Christian Doctrine (i.e. Melanchthon‘s Loci communes) (1561). It scrutinizes Stöckel‘s education and the formative experience of his studies in Wittenberg, his relationship to Luther and Melanchthon, and the influence of his theology on the character of the Reformation in the environment of Upper Hungary, especially in today‘s Eastern Slovakia. Renaissance Der Bildung Im Reformatorischen Europa: Eine Analyse Des Pädagogischen Und Katechetischen Erbes Von Leonard Stöckel
Abstract: [The renaissance of education in reformed Europe: An analysis of the pedagogical and catechetical legacy of Leonard Stöckel]. Leonard Stöckel, a key figure in the fields of education and religious development in Europe during the Reformation, is renowned for his innovative pedagogical methods and catechetical writings. This study examines Stöckel’s key pedagogical and catechetical emphases, focusing particularly on works such as ‘Leges scholae Bartphensis’ (1540), ‘Catechesis D. Leonarti Stöckelii’ (1556), and ‘Historia von Susanna’ (1559). Through a comparative analysis of these texts, it highlights Stöckel’s unique approach to religious education, which innovatively combined classical humanist principles with evangelical theological tenets. The authors also consider other significant works of Stöckel, such as ‘Postilla’ (1596) and ‘Apophthegmata Illustrium Virorum’ (1570), examining his methodological innovations in Scripture exegesis and moral education. The study argues that Stöckel’s work not only reflects the educational and theological ethos of the Reformation but also contributes to the broader narrative of educational development during the era of Reformation humanism. By integrating theological education with humanistic pedagogy, Stöckel created a catechetical legacy that influenced teaching methods and religious education in Upper Hungary and beyond.
